The Guatemalan flag was opened in 1971. The flag is rectangular and the ratio of length to width is 8:5. The flag surface is composed of three parallel and equal vertical rectangles with white in the middle and blue on both sides. The central part of the white rectangle is painted with the national emblem. The colour of the flag comes from the colour of the flag of the former Central American Federation. Blue symbolizes the Pacific and Caribbean respectively, while white symbolizes the pursuit of peace.
